Caughey-Taylor Preserve (Sam Orr's Pond), near St.Andrews,
New Brunswick, Canada

Description of the woods:

Parcels 15067911, 15149446, 15106768 and 01249390 represent close to 300 acres (121 hectares) of pure coastal Acadian forest, which, with its unique blend of hard- and soft-wood trees, is found only in the Canadian Maritime provinces and the State of Maine. In this woodland you will find Eastern White Cedar groves and Balsam Fir thickets, as well as tall White Pine, Red Spruce and Tamarack. View the property from the water and you are immediately struck by the high basaltic and rhyolitic cliffs over 400 million years in age dominating the eastern side, gradually giving way to a more gently sloping forest to the west.

Walking through the woods at this site takes one through stately trees underlain by moss-covered boulders and swales whose appearance is ever-changing with variations in daylight and season. Yellow and White Birch, Red Maple and Trembling Aspen add splashes of colour to this diverse forest in autumn. Glimpses of the sparkling waters of Sam Orr’s Pond catch your eye as the trail winds around this brackish water feature. Several streams feed fresh water into the Pond, but at high tide salt water spills over two natural rock sills that partially dam the pond’s southern end. At the end of the 3.75 km walking trail, some two hours after starting out, the visitor is rewarded with seemingly endless views across Passamaquoddy Bay, named for the native people who once inhabited this wild land.

There is a walking trail around the preserve, details of which can be found here.
